Learning the Concept of Number: a Psycho-Phenomenological Approach (L’apprendimento del concetto di numero: un approccio psico-fenomenologico)

Abstract

Abstract
The concept of a cardinal natural number was mathematically defined for the first time by Friedrich Ludwig Gottlob Frege in 1884 as a single act of thought: "the natural number belonging to the concept F is nothing other than the extension of the concept 'equally numerous' to F." The author revisits this definition in modern terms of the "quotient transition" of abstract algebra: a natural number (cardinal) is a class of equipotent classes. Furthermore, he shows how the quotient transition constitutes the mathematical modeling of the abstraction process, which can lead to two different types of definitions for abstraction: implicit (concept-class) and explicit (class-concept). The article highlights that Frege's definition of number belongs to this latter type, and cites, in support of its logical and operational validity, Bertrand Russell's objections to Husserl and Peano's refusal to identify the "abstract" concept of number with a class. Unlike this definition, characterized, like all mathematics, by complete aseity, the learning of the concept of number arises from experience and is therefore penalized by its limitations and by its unfolding over time, in a prelogical dimension that appears to be fully in tune with Edmund Husserl's phenomenology. The author proposes a plausible psychological-phenomenological interpretation, using Antonio Aliotta's theory of the interference of associations and analogy. Finally, the author shows how by using these psychic processes, integrated with the principle of mathematical induction, it is possible to virtually expand the empirical experience of number to cases that cannot be concretely experienced, allowing us to "acquire" the concept of number without having to experience all the possible real cases in which it is present.

Sunto
