At the end of 1988 Prof. Franco Eugeni, Full Professor of “Istituzioni di Matematica” at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Pescara – Chieti, organized a meeting which was attended by the following personalities from the academic world:
- Prof. Ilio Adorisio, Professor of Economics and Applied Mathematics, University of Aquila;
- Prof. Giovanni Melzi, Professor of Mathematics at the Faculty of Economy the Catholic University of Milano;
- Prof. Bruno Rizzi, Professor of Mathematics at the Faculty of Economy of the University of Napoli;
- Prof. Mario Gionfriddo, Professor of Geometry at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Catania;
- Prof. Aniello Russo Spena, Professor of Hydraulics at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of L’Aquila;
- Prof. Luigia Berardi, Associate Professor of Geometry at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of L’Aquila;
- Prof. Antonio Maturo, Associate Professor of Institutions of Mathematics at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Chieti-Pescara;
- Prof. Fabio Mercanti, Associate Professor of Institutions of Mathematics at the Faculty of Architecture of the Politecnico di Milano;
- Ing. Giovanni Mataloni, technical graduate 8th grade at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Chieti-Pescara, to act as secretary.
Different research topics were proposed in multidisciplinary areas but great attention was attributed to applications of Mathematics to Engineering and Economics. Thus, it was decided to organize a Conference with personalities from the world of Economy, Mathematics and Engineering. This conference, entitled “Economics and Applied Mathematics to Engineering” was organized on 26-28 of January, 1989. The Proceedings have been the starting point for the creation of a new Journal, namely Ratio Matematica. The first issue of “Mathematica Ratio” was published in 1990 by the Department of Science and History of the faculty of Architecture of the University of Chieti-Pescara.
The Scientific Committee of the Journal was composed by the Full Professors of the promoter group and two supplementary important researchers:
- Albrecht Beutelspacher, Professor of Geometry at the University of Giessen, on the proposal of Prof. Berardi;
- Romano Scozzafava, Professor of Probability at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Rome, on the proposal of Prof. Maturo.
The cooperative nature was clearly present in the ideas of the founding group, so it also took a second decision: the creation of a structure. The group, at the initiative of Prof. Adorisio, was formed as a first nucleus of spontaneous academy, with no worries of official records, but working effectively as an organizer of activities and conferences and with temporary headquarters in Via Italica, at the Architecture Faculty . The Academy was inspired by the ancient Academy of Velati (founded in 1598 by the Jesuit mathematician Father Sertorius Caputo) and took the name of “Accademia Aprutina dei Velati” (later “Accademia Piceno Aprutina dei Velati”). This Velati moniker pointed to the fact that the work of the entire team, the committee of the founders and organizers of the conference would be held in groups and in harmony, and that would be the beloved community work, rather than the individual, who claimed “velato” towards general cultural interests of the group.
